Around 40 girls from remote areas of Shirur taluka and neighbouring areas will be empowered with a diploma in “Manufacturing Excellence” in the next two years. FIAT India Automotive Pvt Ltd and Symbiosis Skills & Open University have launched a joint program Diploma in Manufacturing Excellence for girls who have completed 10th standard and who come from economically weaker sections. The MOU for the diploma was signed on the 9th May’19 in the erstwhile presence of chancellor Padma Bhushan Dr S B Mujumdar, Pro-chancellor Dr Swati Mujumdar, President of Fiat India Mr Ravi Gogia, Sr Vice President Mr Rakesh Baweja.
The program will make girl students employable after the diploma and there will be many opportunities for them to work in manufacturing or services industry. Such a diploma program is first of its kind in the region. SSOU and FIAPL will jointly mobilize, screen and select the girl candidates. The Diploma in Manufacturing Excellence is aligned to the job role of NSQF Level 5 of: Machinist, Erector, Machine & Equipment Assembler, Workshop Equipment Assembler, Machine Mechanic and CNC Machinist. The Academic component of the Diploma would be for 8 months, which includes teaching, course material, registration, laboratory, library, examination and placement etc. The 4 Months on the job training (OJT) will be done at various industries. Mr Gogia said “This is the first such initiative of its kind for female candidates. FIAPL is committed to its CSR initiatives in the field of education, especially women education”. FIAPL has spelt this initiative as Girl Education and Employability Program or GEEP and incidentally JEEP happens to be FIAPL’s one of popular vehicle models launched in India! Dr S B Mujumdar mentioned that this was another laudable industry- academia interface in skill development. Dr. Swati Mujumdar said, “we would like to take these girls to take from diploma to even degree programs through vertical mobility and SSOU will make all efforts to make their 2 years at SSOU safest and most eventful.”
FIAPL and SSOU will jointly facilitate the candidates to undergo “on the job training” in industries as a part of the course curriculum, besides, assist the candidates in securing suitable employment after successful completion of the course. Students will spend 8 months in SSOU campus and 4 months in companies including FIAPL every year. Girls who have passed 10th standard with science and math subjects and those who come from economically backward sections are eligible to apply for this program that starts from August 2019.
